#WeAreCommitment: SDG 2030, promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies
The sustainable development of any society is unviable if there is conflict, insecurity, weak institutions or limited access to justice. Even the most advanced and solid democracies are affected by violence against certain groups, corruption or misinformation. That is why the United Nations included the goal of promoting peace, justice and strong institution in the 2030 agenda. To achieve this, there must be a pooling of the work and communication of all the actors involved: public administrations, civil society and companies.
The goals of this objective are materialized in concrete actions such as universal access to justice, greater participation of citizens as a whole, more transparency of institutions, guaranteeing access to information and putting an end to the different forms of violence and trafficking that continue to affect all societies.
Technologies that guarantee people’s rights
Technologies are essential to achieve this goal. Transparency of institutions and access to information and citizen participation are areas where much progress has been made in recent years. Secure identification systems, advances in cryptography and document verification have made it possible to access public administration platforms securely from anywhere. They also facilitate greater transparency of these institutions. Image and document verification tools have also been developed. But these technological milestones would be useless if only part of the population could access these tools. The accessibility and connectivity of these technological solutions make society more egalitarian and fairer. Although much remains to be done, these technological advances bring us closer to the concrete goals of sustainable development. Universal justice, the participation of all citizens in political decision-making, putting an end to the different forms of violence and the guarantee of accurate information that serves as a check on institutions are some of the goals that can be achieved thanks to TICs.
Intelligence and security to ensure accessibility
False information based on document forgery or the rapid evolution and development of deepfake to spread hoaxes also find a quick response in technologies that we research and develop in Gradiant. These are multimedia forensic solutions that use Artificial Intelligence and machine learning to detect the falsity or veracity of certain documents. Examples of this are Signed and VALIDA, a solution currently very useful for financial institutions and insurance companies. Our technological developments in biometrics also allow us to detect deepfakes. Accurate information is key to maintaining the pillars on which any consolidated democracy rests. In the information society, the spread of hoaxes can cause instability, violence towards certain groups or polarization.
Likewise, in order for public administrations to be accessible to anyone in any territory, as required by SDG 16, their digital platforms must be secure. Gradiant’s technological solutions ensure that there can be no cases of document forgery or identity theft. Other solutions such as Shadow, as well as the latest advances in cryptography, such as BlackICE HSM, make it possible to ensure the privacy of people’s data. This is a very important factor since, in order to guarantee citizen access and participation in public administrations, their privacy must be assured. In this sense, INFINITECH is another of the projects in which Gradiant is working together with the European consortium partners and collaborators.
In Gradiant we are convinced that technology is essential to achieve the SDG 2030, in particular the 16th, which seeks peaceful and inclusive societies, providing access to justice for all and building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. Better connected territories, more informed and educated societies so that they can access public administrations and that they count on the entire population in their decisions are some of the goals made possible thanks to technological advances.
